Death Watch

A dying man who’s in and out of sleep,
my life’s sustained by cronies who pass by
me, mirrors of the memories I keep.
But I must wait till dawn to fortify
my temperament. My friends are specialists
who know my needs and wonts. Their drugs, prescribed
by trial and error, serve as catalysts
of visions, lost as fast as they’re described.
No sooner do I recognize a face
to be an ally who could care for me
then it dissolves into that misty space
where dreams rub shoulders with reality.
And thus I live life on a bed of wheels,
delirious between my sleep and meals.
