sink or swim

It has become sink or swim.
Each day, weighs heavier.
Each pill, goes down rougher.
A life has become a burden.
Regrets pile like overdue bills.
Each day, you get better.
Each day, you throw up more.
Reassurances are inexpensive padding.
Sleep is a pall that frightens
nearly as much the sickness.

Close your eyes.
Do you see a life
with a husband and children?
Do you see the blood
and the festering?

You keep up the battle
against a faceless enemy.
